Before selling your phone: backup, accounts and reset in the right order

Based on public sources

Key points

  • Open important data on the new device rather than trusting a backup-complete label.
  • Manually deleting cloud-synced photos can affect other devices.
  • Resolve account protection and verify the reset state before handing over the phone.

After moving to a new phone, the old one can feel like an empty box. Photos, sessions, authentication and mobile-service settings can remain in different places. Preparing a resale means transferring your information and preparing a legitimate handover, not merely emptying the gallery.

Checked September 15, 2026. This guide concerns a personally owned device being sold or given away. Managed work or school devices and devices locked to another person's account require the administrator or original owner's authorized process. It does not cover bypassing locks.

THE GUIDE AT A GLANCE

1. Backup completion differs from successful restoration

A completed backup does not establish that every app and item you need has transferred. Google's Android guidance notes that not all apps back up and restore all data. Google backup guide

Open recent and older photos, key contacts, work documents and necessary conversations on the new device. For banking and authentication apps, an icon alone is insufficient: check that the service's official migration process is complete.

ItemHow to verify transferPossible inconvenience
Photos and documentsOpen files from different datesA listing exists but the original will not open
Contacts and conversationsFind important people and recordsDifficulty recovering essential information
Banking and authenticationVerify official migration and usabilityMore setup when payment or login is needed
Recovery methodsCheck account recovery from the new deviceLosing access after removing the old phone

2. On iPhone, do not start by deleting photos individually

Manually deleting synchronized items while signed into iCloud can remove them from the cloud and other connected devices. Follow Apple's backup, transfer, account and erase sequence, including relevant Watch, Find My, Activation Lock and eSIM guidance. Apple's pre-sale instructions

Menu names vary by OS version. Use the official instructions for your version instead of copying old button locations. Separate verifying what you want to keep on the new phone from erasing the device you will hand over.

3. On Android, check account protection too

Remaining device protection can require the previous account after a reset. Google's guidance explains removing the Google account from the device to disable protection; then follow the manufacturer's resale and reset process. Check other manufacturer accounts or management features as well. Google device protection

A factory reset erases device data; restoring a backup is a separate matter. Follow manufacturer-specific methods and menus. Google reset guidance

If you cannot recall the password or remove protection, resolve it before handover. Use official recovery or manufacturer support instead of giving the buyer your account password.

4. Check SIM, eSIM and connected accessories

Check separately for a physical SIM and memory card. With eSIM, first verify service on the new device, then follow carrier and manufacturer instructions for the old profile. Do not assume removing a profile also handles the service contract.

Review connected watches or other accessories and confirm they can be used with the new phone. Apple's user guide provides a separate handover preparation sequence. iPhone handover guide

5. Verify the final handover state

StageResult to verifyReady to continue when
TransferNecessary files and apps work on the new phoneNo essential data or authentication is missing
Accounts and connectionsOfficial removal or transfer procedures completedPrevious-owner lock issues are resolved
ResetDevice erased using manufacturer instructionsInitial setup state is ready for handover
Transaction recordModel, condition, accessories and agreed termsBoth parties can confirm without unnecessary personal data

Signing into your own account again after checking the setup screen can change the handover state. Prepare condition and transaction records without unnecessarily sharing identification documents, passwords or codes. Avoid publishing a complete device identifier openly when only limited verification is needed.

Prepare a day ahead

  • Complete migration and app checks the day before, then check for omissions.
  • On sale day, review accounts, service, cards and reset state in order.
  • Follow the trading service's official payment and handover procedures.
  • Resolve outstanding issues through official support and adjust timing if needed.

A clean handover means your files work on the new phone and the next owner can legitimately set up the old one, not simply that its gallery looks empty.
