Where to eat in Gangneung: soft tofu or a bowl of spicy noodles?

It is easy to save ten restaurants for a Gangneung weekend, then realise there are only two meals to fill. Start with the dish you actually want. Choosing between tofu in Chodang and noodles in the city centre makes the rest of the day much easier to arrange.

These three places serve slightly different plans: spicy tofu stew, a tofu set meal, or noodles alongside a market visit. They are alternatives to choose from, not a checklist to finish in one trip.

Choose the meal before the restaurant

Ask your companions how much chilli they enjoy. A red tofu broth and a basic tofu set meal can lead to rather different lunches. Once you settle on a dish, add a nearby walk instead of crossing the city repeatedly for food.

Donghwa Garden: when you want jjamppong sundubu

Address: 15, Chodangsundubu-gil 77beon-gil, Gangneung. The Korea Tourism Organization lists spicy jjamppong tofu and a basic tofu set meal. Save the address as well as the name so you choose the Chodang location. Korea Tourism Organization listing

This is a useful choice when the dish itself interests you, rather than simply feeling obliged to eat tofu in Gangneung. A group that enjoys spicy soup may find the decision easy. With children or chilli-sensitive companions, check which other dishes are available that day before committing.

You could follow lunch with a walk at Gangmun Beach. If the queue is longer than expected, ask staff whether the waiting system allows you to leave for a walk. Constantly watching the entrance for your turn can make a seaside break feel surprisingly rushed.

Chodang Halmeoni Sundubu: a tofu set meal

Address: 77, Chodangsundubu-gil, Gangneung. The tourism listing introduces a basic soft-tofu set meal and a spicy clam-and-tofu option. Think about whether you want the set meal or the spicier dish before ordering. Korea Tourism Organization details

After a rich or heavily seasoned dinner the night before, I would look at the basic set meal. Still, do not assume everything is mild because the restaurant specialises in tofu. Ask about the particular dish and broth so you get the meal you had in mind.

This restaurant and Donghwa Garden cover similar ground. On a short trip, I would choose one and leave another meal for noodles or something different. If comparing tofu restaurants is the point of your visit, agree on that with your companions before using two lunches for it.

Beoljip: noodles on a market day

Address: 15, Gyeonggang-ro 2069beon-gil, Gangneung. Consider its jang-kalguksu when your plans are in the city centre rather than Chodang. The travel listing provides its location and menu information. Beoljip location and menu

Keep market snacks until after your noodles. It is tempting to buy chicken and bread along the way, only to feel full when the meal you wanted finally arrives. I would eat first, then pick up snacks to take back to the accommodation.

If driving, check parking instead of assuming there will be a space at the door. Using a public car park can work well when lunch and the market are part of the same outing. If you are leaving by train, avoid squeezing this last meal immediately before departure.

Separate the beach day from the city day

For a day around Gangmun or Gyeongpo, keep one of the Chodang restaurants as your meal option. Lunch in Chodang, a beach walk and a café are enough of a plan. Leave room to shorten the walk if it turns windy or crowded.

On a city-centre and Jungang Market day, group Beoljip with those stops. Lunch in town and dinner near your accommodation can also give the driver a break. I would make time for one meal you really want rather than fit every saved restaurant into the day.

A few checks before setting out

Confirm the branch, break time, last order and queue system. Posted closing hours are not always the same as the kitchen's final ordering time. On your departure day, save a backup in the same neighbourhood in case the wait becomes too long.
