China's National Bureau of Statistics released a September manufacturing purchasing managers' index of 50.1 at 9:30 a.m. local time on September 30, up 0.3 points from August's 49.8. A reading above 50 means that the combined survey responses indicate month-on-month expansion in manufacturing activity. It does not say that output or GDP rose by 0.1%. The details are more cautious. The production index climbed to 51.7, while new orders stood at 50.5, down 0.1 point from August. The PMI was 50.6 for large firms, 49.7 for medium firms and 48.9 for small firms. Expansion in the aggregate and contraction at smaller companies can coexist. AP also cited a separate private PMI of 52.1; its sample and method differ from the official survey, so the two readings should not be spliced into one time series. Imagine, as a hypothetical example, orders rising at three large plants while falling at two neighborhood component suppliers. The average direction can be positive without each supplier feeling a recovery. Security on the Red Sea coast and near the Bab el-Mandeb strait can affect shipping, insurance and delivery. But casualty figures and route effects in the report reflect estimates and reports available at the time; they do not automatically mean a delay for goods bound for Korea. 4. South Africa's women's safety measures: What follows the announcement?
President Cyril Ramaphosa mentioned the bodies of 11 women found in Ekurhuleni since July when he announced urgent measures on September 29.
