An electric holiday journey involves more than distance. Queues, family breaks and destination charging must fit together. Plan to connect each leg comfortably instead of always filling the battery.

Prepare three charging possibilities
Find your first candidate, a backup in the same direction and destination charging. A nearby charger across a motorway may be difficult to reach. Check access and opening hours too.
A hotel listing a charger does not guarantee eligibility, free parking or a space. Retain enough energy to reach an alternative if it is unavailable. Combine charging and meals where useful without making every stop solely about the battery.
Calculate with charge levels
Take a fictional vehicle with 60kWh usable capacity, starting at 80% and retaining 20%. Energy for the leg is 60 × (0.8 − 0.2) = 36kWh. At an assumed 0.18kWh/km, this gives 36 ÷ 0.18 = 200km.
The 20% margin is an illustrative choice, not an official universal rule. Speed, temperature, hills, loading and climate control can change consumption. Recalculate using your vehicle's current estimate and recent experience rather than advertised maximum range alone.

Do not divide only by the charger's rating
Station maximum power differs from the average your car accepts. Vehicle limits, battery temperature and charge level all matter. Australian government charging guide
Adding 30kWh at an average 60kW takes 30 minutes by simple calculation. This is not a vehicle test and excludes queues, access, connection, payment and finishing. Schedule arrival to departure at the rest stop. A different average power changes the time needed for the same energy.
Whether to leave at 80% depends on the next leg
Many vehicles slow rapid charging at high charge levels. With sufficient energy for the next leg, a long extra stop may be avoidable. A distant or uncertain next charger can justify adding more. U.S. Department of Energy travel and charging advice

Compare four factors beyond power

Ten minutes before departure
- Check app login, payment and required membership cards.
- Confirm direction, hours and compatibility for both candidates.
- Retain a fallback if destination charging is unavailable.
- Let a passenger search or stop safely before using the phone.
