Is HEPA enough? Five checks before buying an air purifier

Air-purifier listings are full of “HEPA”, “fine particles” and “powerful cleaning”. Yet the final question is often simpler: “Will this work quietly in the room where I sleep?” A filter label alone cannot answer that.

1. HEPA describes a filter; CADR describes how much air is cleaned

Even a fine sieve takes time to process a bucket if water only trickles through it. An air purifier likewise needs both particle capture and enough airflow over time. This is an explanatory analogy, not a claim that water and air filtration use the same test.

One product might state CADR in m³/h and another in cfm. Choosing the larger number without converting units is not a meaningful comparison. Likewise, do not treat Korean pyeong and square metres as identical numbers. When checking certification, look up the exact model number, not a similar product name. AHAM product directory.

2. The size of your home is not automatically the size to buy for

Decide where the unit will mainly operate. A bedroom with its door closed and an open kitchen/living room are different spaces. EPA advises considering the entire connected area in an open layout and allowing for high ceilings. EPA guide to home air cleaners.

Here is a hypothetical calculation to explain the numbers. A 30m² floor area with a 2.4m ceiling has a volume of 72m³. Assuming a CADR of 360m³/h gives 360 ÷ 72 = five equivalent room volumes per hour. This is neither a measured product result nor a universal recommendation for every home.

It does not guarantee that all air becomes perfectly clean in 12 minutes. Real rooms have mixing, continuing pollution sources, furniture, placement and fan-setting effects. Use the calculation to understand ratings and their test conditions, not to assume that one unit treats every room behind closed doors equally well.

3. Maximum cleaning and minimum sleep-mode noise can create an illusion

Check whether the maximum CADR on the front of a listing and the minimum noise on the back apply simultaneously. EPA explains that CADR is generally measured at the highest speed, while lower speeds filter less air. Imagining maximum cleaning and minimum noise as the everyday operating combination may create the wrong expectation.

For a bedroom, look for sleep-mode noise and airflow information, whether lights can be switched off, and how easily your chosen mode is maintained. An unpublished sleep-mode CADR does not prove poor performance, but neither does it justify assuming maximum performance. Ask the seller which mode was used for each measurement.

In a hypothetical situation, a more powerful unit may spend less time running if its noise keeps prompting you to switch it off. Equally, quiet operation alone should not outweigh the room’s needs. The aim is to match the space to a mode you can keep using.

4. Particles, odours and ventilation are different jobs

EPA describes CADR as a particle metric; gases require a suitable medium such as activated carbon. A high particle CADR alone therefore does not demonstrate removal of every odour. Check filter construction, tested substances and conditions, rather than relying on a one-line carbon-filter claim. EPA on particle and gas filters.

A purifier does not replace reducing pollution sources or ventilating with clean outdoor air. Continuing cooking smells or moisture problems also require attention to the source. EPA advises avoiding devices that intentionally generate ozone. If a listing promotes a special disinfection technology, examine its method and testing evidence first. Placement is more than finding an attractive empty corner. Keep curtains and furniture from blocking intake and outlets, and follow the manual’s wall-clearance instructions. The four-step graphic above is an editorial decision diagram, not a measured airflow simulation.

5. Filter costs can outlast the excitement of a discount

Before putting only the unit in your basket, note the replacement filter’s model number and price. Check how many filters need changing, continuing availability, and the maintenance and replacement procedure. Actual replacement intervals depend on the environment, operating time and manufacturer instructions.

The following hypothetical example illustrates cost structure only. These are not real products or current prices, and equal performance is not assumed. Excluding delivery, electricity and repairs, assume the purchase includes the initial filter and three additional filters are bought, one each year over the following three years.

A starts ₩60,000 cheaper, but costs ₩30,000 more in this scenario. That does not establish B as the better product. First match performance and usability, then compare maintenance over the same period. Different replacement frequencies change the result.

For electricity, write down units instead of relying on “low power”. Assuming constant consumption of 30W for eight hours daily over 30 days, 30 ÷ 1,000 × 8 × 30 = 7.2kWh. That is energy consumed under an assumption, not a bill. Actual mode-specific power and your household’s tariff conditions are needed to estimate charges.

Fill in five blanks before paying

  • Main operating space: ___m²; check connected rooms and ceiling height.
  • Exact model and CADR: ___; check units and test conditions.
  • Everyday operating mode: ___; check noise, lights and controls.
  • Replacement filter: ₩___; check availability and replacement instructions.
  • Installation spot: ___; check airflow space and the manual’s clearances.

With these filled in, a long product name becomes less distracting. A good purifier is less about the most impressive phrase in a brochure and more about a machine you can consistently use and maintain in your own space.
