Passport expires in under six months: can you travel? Check by destination

Your passport expires in five months. Is a short holiday still possible? The blanket answer “international travel always requires six months” can make you abandon a workable trip or miss a real requirement. A passport has one expiry date, but destinations read that date differently.

This general short-trip guide was checked for the September 29, 2026, 13:00 KST slot. It is written primarily for travellers with ordinary Republic of Korea passports. Do not use the table to decide special rules for emergency passports, residence-permit holders, employment or study. Meeting passport conditions does not guarantee admission.

Three-point summary

  • Six months of remaining passport validity is not a universal rule.
  • Singapore requires six months on entry; Schengen travel also checks three months after planned departure and the issue date.
  • Write down destinations, transit points, dates and passport type, then check official guidance and the operating airline.

Put your passport beside your itinerary

Record four dates: passport issue date, expiry date, arrival at the destination and departure from it. If departure from Korea and arrival abroad fall on different days, record the local arrival date separately. Make a separate arrival/departure line for each country on a multi-country trip.

The useful question is not simply “how many months remain today?” but from which date does the rule require how much validity? A period measured from entry differs from one measured after departure, especially on longer trips. Do not casually replace six calendar months with 180 days. Check the official wording and calendar dates. For borderline dates, give the consulate and airline your actual itinerary.

How do Japan, Singapore, Schengen and the UK differ?

DestinationPassport rule checkedHow to compare datesAlso check
JapanNo separately set minimum remaining periodValidity extending beyond the intended stay is recommendedPurpose, passport type and room for itinerary changes
SingaporeAt least six months, except for Singapore passport holdersRemaining validity at entrySG Arrival Card and visa conditions separately
Short Schengen tripAt least three months after planned departure; issued within the previous ten years at entryCheck expiry and issue dates separatelySpecific conditions from the destination’s consulate
UKPassport valid throughout the stayValid through the end of the stayVisa or ETA requirements separately

Japan’s embassy in Korea explains in Q22 that having less than six months remaining is not itself a problem and recommends validity beyond the planned stay. This does not mean boarding is assured immediately before expiry. Embassy of Japan, Q22

Singapore’s ICA requires at least six months for travellers other than Singapore passport holders. Ordinary arriving visitors must submit the free SG Arrival Card within three days, including arrival day; exceptions include transit without immigration clearance. The card is separate from a visa. ICA entry requirements

EU guidance describes three months beyond intended departure and issue within the ten years preceding entry for non-EU travellers. On a trip covering several Schengen countries, check the final departure from that area. Do not apply one rule to all of “Europe”; check places such as the UK and Ireland separately. UK guidance requires a passport valid throughout the stay and calls for checking visas, ETAs and transit conditions. Passing the validity check does not complete the other procedures. UK pre-travel guidance

A hypothetical itinerary shows the difference

In a hypothetical example, a passport expires on March 20, 2027, and the traveller arrives on October 1, 2026, leaving on October 8. Singapore’s six-month entry test requires validity through April 1, 2027. This passport fails that test.

For a Japan visit with the same dates, a blanket six-month rule would not disqualify the passport. This compares remaining validity only. The three-month date for Schengen travel is January 8, 2027, so the expiry condition is met, but the issue date and other entry conditions still need checking.

This is a calculation exercise, not boarding or admission clearance for an actual booking. If the trip extends into December or adds entry at a transit point, redo the date sheet. Changing the itinerary can change the answer even with the same passport.

Check what “only transiting” actually means

“Waiting at an airport” and “transiting without immigration clearance” are not always interchangeable. Look for separate tickets, baggage re-check, airport changes and overnight accommodation outside the airport. Do not infer immigration requirements from the booking format alone. Ask the airline where you collect baggage and check in for the next flight.

Make your question concrete: “I have an ordinary Republic of Korea passport expiring on [date], and arrive and leave on [dates]. Must I clear immigration at the transit point? Does this passport meet the boarding-document conditions for this route?” Keep official links alongside the reply. UK guidance also explains that carriers check passports and travel documents before departure. UK carrier checks

If you replace the passport, recheck the booking too

If validity is insufficient, compare changing your travel dates with the available replacement timetable. Avoid committing on the assumption that the passport will arrive before departure without confirming issue and collection timing. After replacement, compare the name, number and expiry entered in bookings with documents linked to visas or electronic authorisations. Ask each issuing authority whether an update or a new application is needed.

For family trips, checking one adult’s passport is not enough. Make one line per traveller so a child’s expiry date is not missed. When sharing photographs, avoid exposing passport numbers or other personal information unnecessarily.

A five-minute pre-departure checklist

1. Check every traveller’s passport type, issue date and expiry directly. 2. Record local entry and departure dates for destinations and transit points. 3. Find the reference date and additional conditions in official consular or immigration guidance. 4. Confirm the transfer route and boarding documents with the operating airline. 5. After replacement or itinerary changes, recheck booking details, visas, electronic authorisations and arrival cards.

A passport may resemble a coupon usable until its expiry, but at a border it is read together with the itinerary. Add “when and where am I entering?” after “how many months remain?” and the next checks become much clearer.
